Long-haired ladies know that there are few things more satisfying than the sensation of falling asleep with your hair down. Even in our baggiest, rattiest pajamas, dozing off with our locks splayed out across the pillow can make you feel like a real-life Sleeping Beauty.
Unfortunately, there’s nothing beautiful about waking up with pimples, and dermatologists say that’s exactly what can happen as a result of your cuddling up with your free-flying strands.
“Hair acts like a magnet for dirt and pollution,” dermatologist Dendy Engelman, MD, told Well + Good. “When you sleep, your hair can rub on your face and bedding making you more susceptible to breakouts.”
And it’s not just the big, bad world that’s conspiring to give you pimples—your own body is too. Like your face, your scalp produces its own sebum (the same stuff in pimples). Sebum can work its way down the hair strand, and If you sleep with your hair down, right onto your freshly-washed face.
Unless you showered right before bed, Engelman recommends putting your hair up before you turn in. “Before going to sleep, I recommend pulling hair into a loose braid or ponytail,” she told Well + Good. “Secure that with a SlipSilk scrunchie, which are my favorite because they are gentle on the hair.”
